Interactions between the sexual identity of the nervous system and the social environment mediate lifespan in Drosophila melanogaster

Sex differences in lifespan are ubiquitous, but the underlying causal factors remain poorly understood. Inter- and intrasexual social interactions are well known to influence lifespan in many taxa, but it has proved challenging to separate the role of sex-specific behaviours from wider physiological differences between the sexes. The electrically evoked blink reflex (BR) consists of an ipsilateral R1 component (R1) at 11 ms and two bilateral components R2 at 33 ms and R3 at 83 ms. It is still unclear whether the R2 is mediated by activation of tactile or nociceptive afferents. For testing the nociceptive hypothesis, nociceptors of the supraorbital nerve were selectively activated by infrared laser stimuli in 10 subjects. Only painful laser stimuli evoked a bilateral early polyphasic BR response (LR2) at 71 ms. Stimulation of infraorbital and mental nerve dermatomes was equally effective. Progressive versus rapid rate of contraction during 7 wk of isometric resistance training.

The aim of this study was to compare the effects of isometric training performed with progressive versus rapid rate of contraction on the knee extensor neuromuscular properties over a 7-wk period.Sixteen healthy male subjects trained quadriceps femoris muscle in a leg extension machine three times a week during 7 wk. Changes in neuromuscular function after tasks involving control of EMG versus torque feedback of the same duration.

This study was designed to compare alterations in neuromuscular function after two tasks of similar duration involving the control of (1) torque level fixed at 40% maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) torque (torque task) and (2) EMG level when exerting 40% MVC torque on the knee extensor muscles. Ten healthy subjects volunteered to participate in two testing sessions separated by approximately 2 h. Neuromuscular adaptations and serum hormones in women during short-term intensive strength training

The effects were investigated in ten women of intensive heavy resistance strength training lasting for 3 weeks on electromyographic (EMG) activity, muscle cross-sectional area (CSA) and voluntary force production characteristics of leg extensor muscles. Blood samples for the determinations of serum hormones were taken from five of the subjects. Significant increases occurred in the higher force portions of the isometric force-time curve with an increase of 9.7 (SD 8.4)% (P less than 0.01) in maximal peak force. Compensating for instantaneous signal mixing in transfer entropy analysis of neurobiological time series

The transfer entropy (TE) has recently emerged as a nonlinear model-free tool, framed in information theory, to detect directed interactions in coupled processes. Unfortunately, when applied to neurobiological time series TE is biased by signal cross-talk due to volume conduction.
